Why in starship troopers citizenship is something that is earned rather than given away?
Robert A. Heinlein's Starship Troopers is a political essay as well as a novel. Large portions of the book take place in classrooms, with Rico and other characters engaged in debates with their History and Moral Philosophy teachers, who are often thought to be speaking in Heinlein's voice. The overall theme of the book is that social responsibility requires being prepared to make individual sacrifice. Heinlein's Terran Federation is a limited democracy with aspects of a meritocracy based on willingness to sacrifice in the common interest. Suffrage belongs only to those willing to serve their society by two years of volunteer Federal Service — "the franchise is today limited to discharged veterans", (ch. XII), instead of anyone "...who is 18 years old and has a body temperature near 37 °C" The Federation is required to find a place for anyone who desires to serve, regardless of his skill or aptitude (this also includes dangerous non-military work such as serving as experimental medical test subjects).
There is an explicitly-made contrast to the democracies of the 20th century, which according to the novel, collapsed because "people had been led to believe that they could simply vote for whatever they wanted... and get it, without toil, without sweat, without tears."Indeed, Colonel Dubois criticizes as unrealistic the famous U.S. Declaration of Independence line concerning "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness". No one can stop anyone from pursuing happiness, but life and liberty are said to exist only if they are deliberately sought and paid for.
Starship Troopers is also widely-regarded as a vehicle for Heinlein's anti-communist views. Characters attack Karl Marx (a "pompous fraud"), the labor theory of value ("All the work one cares to add will not turn a mud pie into an apple tart...") and Plato's The Republic ("ant-like communism" and "weird in the extreme").
why does starship troopers not work on vista basic and what can i do to fix it?
Try running it in administrator mode, if that doesn't work right click the icon, and run one of the older service packs.
If that doesn't work add more detail to what it says. . . open the crash notepad and paste what it says.
Need to know the similarites and differences between the armor in starship troopers and Forever War?
I suspect that Forever War hardware was based on the Starship Troopers equipment. Heinlein wrote his book well before Haldeman and it was the definitive hard-SF "army grunt" story. Haldeman just wrote -at the time of the Vietnam war protests - that the military life was not one of glory. More likely, it was about despair and disconnection from real life.
Heinlein's gung-ho "only veterans should vote" attitude in the book was not popular by then. Mind you, it was likely a "constructed world" rather than a political point of view; but he took a lot of heat for it over the years.
I don't remember the details - it's been 30 years since I read either of them. (Actually, IIRC, Forever War was written as a series of novellas. Possibly re-written to fit the traditional novel format, or you may find it disjointed and episodic.)
The main thing I recall was the fog or feild around the battles in Forever War. If you drop a bunch of troopers into a war zone, today's ammo, so presumably the future's, is quite capable of knocking them out on the way down; or laying waste to large areas so as to not miss them. The old "Why don't they just carpet bomb?"
Heinlein ignored this. Haldeman came up with some damping field so that nothing worked except hand-to-hand combat. (Did they use bow and arrow or something?)
With today's smart-bombs and precsion munitions, you have ot wonder what the defences for single combatants would be.
I'm a bit hazy, it's been a while since I read these.
Does any one have anything from the movie starship troopers?
Galoob made the micro machine size ones and of course there were the bigger size action figures including vehicles and bugs.
You won't find too many of these because they can be very expensive. Some pieces are very rare and these can fetch big prices on eBay. Unless you luck out at your local comic shop...(below is a link to Diamond that has a comic store locator) you may have trouble finding anything.
that was a really cool movie! but only the first one. Its a shame they never released a game on the home consoles! but hey If you have an xbox 360 there is a game called Earth Defense Force 2017 that has the same feel and action from the troopers movie! Even though they are not related, you are overwhelmed by giant bugs that swarm you on the higher difficulty levels. its really a fun game I think the developers had the troopers movie in mind when they were making the EDF games. the support troops that follow you around yell out courageous and gung-ho phrases too. some of them are kinda funny. anyways check it out!
Where can I download the song that plays at the credits of starship troopers 3?
see the end of the credits for the name of the song (They are usually listed in the order they are played. If not, go to imdb.com and look for the music score).
Then use a torrent-client and download the song. (Or the more political correct answer, buy the song from a website that offers the song for a certain price.)
