Meta Keywords tag for websites and search engine rank?
Bing pays no attention to META Keywords.
There are rumors off and on that Yahoo uses it as a small part of their calculation, but this does not match the behavior I've seen.
I generally include recommendations on META Keywords for my clients, but only because they ask if it isn't there. I never optimize it on my own sites.

What determines the search engine rank/positioning for different sites such as Yahoo & Google?
In the past the most effective was on-site optimization(tweaking your sites html code, for example: increasing keyword density, changing titles[huge even now], and making your content as clear as possible].
Currently Search Engines look much more on anchor texts, click-able text in link. More links with phrase you aim for you will get, more relevant you will be.
How it works?
Simply SEs measure how many links you have and with what anchor texts they link to you. Than they look at links relevancy, so you wont get much from getting link from site about flowers to site about cars so don't bother with it.
The ranking power is important also, you can expect to get much better results by getting a link from high ranking site than from one that isn't even indexed.
Linking is biggest case now but recent studies show that some more developed SEs like Google[hmmm... currently only Google] are getting more and more concerned about content as they created some advanced algorithms that allow them to rank relevancy and quality of material.
Hope that this information helped you at least a bit, if not Google Search Engine Optimization.
Does the number of pages in your web site affect search engine rank?
400 pages -- mean 400 chances of getting ranked well in the search engine compared to having only 1 page. You'd want to rank well for
- red widgets
- blue widgets
- yellow widgets
- black widgets
- and all other variations for each of those 400 products
I suggest you give each product each own page and make sure you write some detailed product description on the page (the more relevant text, the better)
Write good titles with the keywords in the title tags.
Write good meta description tags that have the right keywords for the search engines and the right enticement for the user when they see your site in the search engine results
Use keywords in the domains
I suggest you start by looking at the Google search results for your keyword terms -- and analyze what the top 10 did to actually land on the top 10.
how do you get to google rank #1? how do you get search engine ranking to increase in all search engines?
It can be done but it'll take more than a simple answer, you need specific training.
If you're asking because you have a brick and mortar business then check to see if Gil Corner is doing one of his free webinars sometime soon (http://www.gilscorner.com/webinar). It's a complete training with actionable steps (and it doesn't cost anything so that's a plus).
For any other virtual business that's online, you'll need a different tutorial.
Basically you want to do keyword research to find out what are the search terms you want to get ranked for. You can use google's keyword research tool and microsoft's online commercial intent tool to find that out and make sure those are buying keywords. Just do a search for these tools and you'll find them.
Then I suggest you download a free tool called traffic travis that will tell you what needs to be done to your website to have it be more search engine friendly. I believe the site's at http://www.traffictravis.com
Once you've done all that, you need to constantly get backlinks to your site (links from another site to your own WITHOUT you linking back). Search for angela's backlinks and you'll find a very cheap way to do that.
There's a lot more to it but those are the steps that make all the difference.
Is there a source listing search engine rank relative to other search engines in each country & by language?
Hey Robin - The best websites I know of to get those stats are either Alexa.com or Quantast.com - there you can find traffic stats by country, language, etc and you can also drill down by demographics. Quantcast will even show you what other sites their visitors go to.
Maybe do a search for a list of the search engines and then plug each one into those websites to see where it leads you.
How do increase my search engine rank for my small business?
I would suggest a 2 part process.
Step 1, would be to look at your website to ensure that you have implemented basic SEO
Step 2 would be to submit your website to google local business and to directories.
Take a look at your website to ensure that you have implemented SEO (search engine optimisation)
Good SEO should help people or search engines find your information
So if you build a website that is about 'roofs', you should ensure that the web pages are optimised for the content displayed and information offered. This includes using "key words" (keywords) for the product.
Some of the basic steps and considerations for SEO would be the following:
1) Using relevant keywords within the website / page content, the content of the website pages is the top priority for SEO, your website pages should provide good information about the product / service or subject.
2) The website name, or domain name, it can help people or search engines find your information if your domain name includes the product / subject / keywords
3) The page names, you may have lots of information about that requires separate pages, using keywords for the page / file name is good practice,
4) Meta tags, these are parts of the html code that are used by Search engines to help identify the content of the webpage. The html code of the page is not visible to the user unless you select view page source within the browser. You can to add important information about the webpage and products on the webpage to the meta tags, this is where you can add keywords about the products on the webpage.
Important html tags include:
This page is about keywords
5) Images, you can use relevant keywords for image file names on your webpage. You can also add 'alternate text' to the image within the html code, this is designed to help users that may have impaired vision and use computer software called 'screen readers' which is an audio tool that provides audio description of what is on the screen.
alt tex html tag: alt="This text describes the content / picture on the image and will be read by screen reader and search engines"
Basic Steps to Follow to help improve search engine listings for your website
If your site is for your 'business' then you should submit it to Google Local Business: this can help you can gain top search results in Google for your business products or services using the Local Business service from Google. You will need to register for a googlemail account then submit your website / business details to Google's local business centre.
Marketing your Website using Directories and Website Links
The next step is to get links to your website. This is one of the most important things that you can do to help your website with regard to internet marketing and search engine results. To do this you will need to list your website on as many websites and directories as possible. Directories operate in one of 3 ways: Paid Listing Directory, Free and Reciprocal Link Directories.
Paid Listing Directory: for a listing fee your website is listed, often these are higher quality directories as only serious website owners and business's will pay to be listed. These are usually the fastest way to get listed and get links to your website, as the paid listing directories are run as a business. There are niche/specialist and general directories.
Free Directories: it can take a long time to get your website listed. As the service is free, there may be little or no control of the quality of websites being listed.
Reciprocal Link Directories: these again can take time before your website is listed and your website will only be listed after you provide a link to them.
Website owners wishing to promote their new website in the search engines are often in a hurry to 'get results' so the listing service offered by Paid Listing Directories is the fastest way to get links to your website.
1. You should try and get as many links to your websites as possible (add your website to directories)
2. Try to get keyword links, these are links that use 'content relevant keywords' as the anchor text.
Does making your website standards compliant actually give it a better search-engine rank?
Yes, it does. Not validating your XHTML and CSS code could result in having bad code in your pages. These bad codes could result in the search engine spiders not being able to accurately crawl your website.
You may want to consider some simple algorithms which,
when observed and committed in designing of a website
with placement of various critical metatags that can
surely achieve a high search engine presence and
increase Internet traffic to your website. These
metatag strategies work well with published webpages
at Google and Yahoo.
Design: Should you create an extensive Flash-based
website, make sure to fill-in the property entries
such as the Title, Description and Keywords. Failing
to do so, leaves no hard HTML or ALT resource that can
be readily indexed by search robots. Also consider the
Internet audience and their incoming setup. For
example, if they are on analog/dialup, Flash webpages
take too long to load up and therefore analog users
will likely lose interest and discontinue entering the
Flash site. On the other hand, anyone on hi-speed DSL
lines, will welcome Flash pages which load quickly. So
before designing a pure Flash websitge, ask the simple
question, "Who's my end user - is he on dialup or
DSL?" And if you had to choose between these two users
for maximum marketability, then select analog users
since 80% of most resident users are still analog
Internet subscribers and pure HTML designed webpages
is best for them.
A non-Flash-based website which relies on hard text,
is far easier to be indexed by search robots. Limit
the use of stylized text saved as .gifs since as a
graphic, they are not indexable by search robots.
Avoid use of frames since any number of search robots
are unable to properly classify textual material.
Placement of Metatags:
A ranking or search order does take place with Google
and Yahoo and it begins with the "Title" metag which
should consist of no more than 65 characters separated
by commas. The "Title" should describe in generic
terms, the goods and services, followed by a location
from which the resource is located, i.e., city, state.
The placement of a domain name which is not generic
within the "Title" is not appropriate, unless your
domain name is a major recognizable brand name.
The second metatag is the "Description" which is
usually 25-30 words to form a complete sentence which
best describes one's goods and services.
And the very last category - "Keywords" are also
somewhat limited to 15-16 words which can be plural
and compound in nature. Again, avoid multiple entries
which could be mistaken as "spamdexed entries" which
is defined as the loading, and submission of
repetitive words into a particular metatag category.
"Spamdexing" when discovered on a webpage and reported
to Google's spamreport.com can result in the
elimination of your website from their search
