Can someone tell me how an ouija board works and why people say it's scary?

People that say the OUIJA boards cause paranormal effects are lying. Gosh, Parker Brothers has sold tens of thousands of those things and we are still waiting for our FIRST verifiable "visitation". It sure would be cool, but so far... nada. Of course there is a LOT of "anecdotal" evidence... e.g. "Once, my brother and I were playing with a OUIJA board we carved from the bones of an indian shaman, whose grave we robbed at midnight on the full moon... and well, the board started to shake... and my brother turned into a newt!" "I got better."

what was the original purpose of the FBI, why was it created?

Basically it was created as the Bureau of Investigation in 1908 to give the U.S. Attorney General an investigative staff of his own within the Justice Department to gather evidence for the prosecution of the few federal crimes then on the books. Prior to this the Justice Department had relied on investigators furnished by the U.S. Secret Service. Among the early crimes placed by Congress within the investigative jurisdiction of the Bureau were opium smuggling (1908), interstate transportation of women for immoral purposes (1910), and interstate transportation of stolen motor vehicles (1919). They did not, and do not, investigate federal crimes that were either Postal (mail robbery, mail fraud, etc.) or Treasury (counterfeiting, tax evasion, etc.) violations. In the early days the agents had no police powers. They could carry weapons only with special permission and were not authorized to make arrests. For this they needed the cooperation of local police, who were often untrained, poorly equipped, or corrupt. J. Edgar Hoover became Director of the Bureau in 1924 and remained in that position until his death in 1972. The Bureau of Investigation was renamed the U.S. Bureau of Investigation in 1932 and, at nearly the end of Prohibition, was merged with the Prohibition Bureau (temporarily moved from the Treasury Department) and renamed the Division of Investigation. It retained this name until July 1, 1935, when it became the modern Federal Bureau of Investigation, or FBI. Outlaw gangs had long terrorized the nation, fleeing from one to state to another and avoiding prosecution through the limited jurisdiction of state and local authorities. Adopting to modern technology, these criminals, including the likes of John Dillinger, "Baby Face" Nelson, "Pretty Boy" Floyd, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, the Barker-Karpis Gang, "Machine Gun" Kelly and others, were also often better financed and equipped than were local police. During the Depression, high-profile crimes such as the Lindbergh kidnapping and the Kansas City Union Station Massacre showed the need for federalized crime control. Hoover and his superior, Attorney General Homer S. Cummings, successfully lobbied Congress for the passage of new anti-crime laws in 1934 which made the Division of Investigation virtually a national police force charged with enforcement of the new laws. The federal anti-crime bills of 1934 armed agents of the future FBI and gave them full arrest powers, also made it a federal crime to assault or kill a federal agent, bribe a federal prison officer, rob a federal bank, possess an unlicensed machine gun, flee across state lines to avoid prosecution, etc.

what is the true story of bonnie and clyde?

Bonnie Parker (October 1, 1910 – May 23, 1934) and Clyde Barrow (March 24, 1909 – May 23, 1934) were well known outlaws, robbers, and criminals who, with their gang, travelled the Central United States during the Great Depression. Their exploits were known nationwide. They captured the attention of the American press and its readership during what is sometimes referred to as the "public enemy era" between 1931 and 1934. Though known today for his dozen-or-so bank robberies, Barrow in fact preferred to rob small stores or rural gas stations. The gang is believed to have killed at least nine police officers and committed several civilian murders. They were eventually ambushed and killed in Louisiana by law officers. Believed at the time to be a full participant in the gang's crimes, Parker's role has since been a source of controversy. While gang members W. D. Jones and Ralph Fults said they never saw her fire a gun and described her role as logistical,Jones also told investigators that she had fired a pistol at officers "two or three times" when he was deposed under arrest in 1933. By 1968, his recollection was that "during the five big gun battles I was with them, she never fired a gun. But I'll say she was a hell of a loader." Youngest Barrow sister Marie made the same claim: "Bonnie never fired a shot. She just followed my brother no matter where he went." Parker's reputation as a cigar-smoking gun moll grew out of a gag snapshot found by police and released to the press; while she did chain-smoke Camel cigarettes, she was not a cigar smoker. Author Jeff Guinn, in his 2009 book Go Down Together: The True, Untold Story of Bonnie and Clyde, explains their appeal: "Although Clyde and Bonnie were never criminal masterminds or even particularly competent crooks — their two year crime spree was as much a reign of error as terror — the media made them seem like they were, and that was enough to turn them into icons.... Barrow Gang fans liked the idea of colorful young rebels sticking it to bankers and cops. Clyde and Bonnie were even better than actors like Jimmy Cagney who committed crimes onscreen, because they were doing it for real.

However, the aunt keeps dozens of cats in her home, and the man is deathly afraid of cats. IMDb review excerpt: A couple of shock scenes, particularly a well-staged one involving Eleanor Parker trying to make her way up a steep incline in her electric wheelchair, give the picture some much-needed flair. Here's a clip from the movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2k-1z8rv_Q In the movie you remember: Does she go backwards down a hill? She has an electric wheelchair, but the brakes won't hold.

TENNESSEE WILLIAMS, Forward to Sweet Bird of Youth Falsehood has a perennial spring. EDMUND BURKE, speech on American Taxation, 1774 Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no fibs. OLIVER GOLDSMITH, She Stoops to Conquer A small lie, if it actually is a lie, condemns a man as much as a big and black falsehood. If a man will deliberately cheat to the amount of a single cent, give him opportunity and he would cheat to any amount. E. H. CHAPIN, Living Words A good memory is needed once we have lied. PIERRE CORNEILLE, Le Menteur There are worse things than a lie... I have found... that it may be well to choose one sin in order that another may be shunned. ANTHONY TROLLOPE, Doctor Wortle's School I hate deception, even where the imagination only is concerned. GEORGE WASHINGTON, letter to Dr. John Cochran, Aug. 16, 1779 The trust of the innocent is the liar's most useful tool. STEPHEN KING, Needful Things The lie that flatters I abhor the most. WILLIAM COWPER, Table Talk There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics. MARK TWAIN, Autobiography No mask like open truth to cover lies, As to go naked is the best disguise. WILLIAM CONGREVE, The Double Dealer I never encourage deceit, and falsehood, especially if you have got a bad memory, is the worst enemy a fellow can have. The fact is truth is your truest friend, no matter what the circumstances are. ABRAHAM LINCOLN, letter to George E. Pickett, Feb. 22, 1841 He who permits himself to tell a lie once, finds it much easier to do it a second and third time, till at length it becomes habitual; he tells lies without attending to it, and truths without the world's believing him. This falsehood of the tongue leads to that of the heart, and in time depraves all its good dispositions. THOMAS JEFFERSON, leter to Peter Carr, Aug. 19, 1785 One of the things cops learn first is that everyone lies. Some people to hide things, some people just for the hell of it, but everyone lies. Assume that everyone is hiding something, it saves time. LAURELL K. HAMILTON, The Killing Dance And, after all, what is a lie? 'Tis but The truth in masquerade. LORD BYRON, Don Juan When a liar became too skilled at deception, he could lose the ability to discern truth, and could himself be more easily deceived. DEAN KOONTZ, Velocity The best lies are always at least partially true. LAURELL K. HAMILTON, Blue Moon Lies are a little fortress; inside them you can feel safe and powerful. Through your little fortress of lies you try to run your life and manipulate others. But the fortress needs walls, so you build some. These are the justifications for your lies. You know, like you are doing this to protect someone you love, to keep them from feeling pain. Whatever works, just so you feel okay about the lies. WM. PAUL YOUNG, The Shack Lies were like acid, corrosive: They could dissolve trust in a heartbeat. ROB THURMAN, Nightlife There is no vice that doth so cover a man with shame as to be found false and perfidious. FRANCIS BACON, Essays There must be repressed truth even in lies. STANISLAW IGNACY WITKIEWICZ, The Madman and the Nun A half-truth does more mischief than a whole lie. IVAN PANIN, Thoughts Truth travels slowly and gets weaker as it goes. Suitable lies are strong and run faster. ARIANA FRANKLIN, Mistress of the Art of Death As the snow before the sun, even so is a polished lie before the naked truth. WILLIAM SCOTT DOWNEY, Proverbs The prevarication and white lies which a mind that keeps itself ambitiously pure is as uneasy under as a great artist under the false touches that no eye detects but his own, are worn as lightly as mere trimmings when once the actions have become a lie. GEORGE ELIOT, Silas Marner It is not the lie that passeth through the mind, but the lie that sinketh in, and settleth in it, that doth the hurt. FRANCIS BACON, Essays A lie is a very short wick in a very small lamp. The oil of reputation is very soon sucked up and gone. And just as soon as a man is known to lie, he is like a two-foot pump in a hundred-foot well. He cannot touch bottom at all. What are some good quotes for procrastination and getting things done?

“Procrastination is the art of keeping up with yesterday.” - Don Marquis “No idleness, no laziness, no procrastination; never put off till tomorrow what you can do today” - Lord Chesterfield “How soon 'not now' becomes 'never'.” - Martin Luther “I think honestly procrastination on something like doing taxes tends to be the American past time.” - Raphael Tulino “We can no longer procrastinate.” - Rob Portman “Procrastination is like a credit card: it's a lot of fun until you get the bill.” - Christopher Parker “One thing that's good about procrastination is that you always have something planned for tomorrow.” - G. B. Stern “Procrastination is opportunity's natural assassin.” - Victor Kiam “Procrastination is the thief of time.” - Edward Young “People shouldn't have to work this hard to get something done. I'm a hemorrhoid, fine, but someone has to keep at things to get things done. I'm fighting for everyone in Nevada. I'm fighting for the big picture.” - Rhonda Appelgate “There's legislation that we want to get done, ... Unless politics completely obfuscates the ability to get things done, we're going to stay here.” - Dennis Hastert “He's never missed a beat, and he's done a terrific job since. ...Just a great guy: tough, gritty, determined to get things done.” - Richard Mandella Here are the sources - http://www.quotesdaddy.com/quote/336690/don-marquis/procrastination-is-the-art-of-keeping-up-with-yesterday http://www.quotesdaddy.com/quote/1119614/lord-chesterfield/no-idleness-no-laziness-no-procrastination-never

Was that mean what that reporter said to the Lions head coach?

Rob Parker is generally a good reporter. What he said was uncalled for, and he might have realized it after the press conference. Parker has thrown *stuff* at the fan before with his Clubhouse Confidential segment on Sports Final Edition here in Detroit but this was ridiculous. Not necessarily something to get fired over (like the guys on the Fox show were saying should happen) but there should at least be some sort of an apology, which may have happened last night (I didn't watch SFE last night so I'll leave it at "may"). Added: It's on the Detroit News website. http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20081222/OPINION03/812220369/1126/SPORTS0101

What is the sequence of the Emily the Strange book series?

http://www.amazon.com 'Cosmic Debris' and/or an author and illustrators (Rob Reger, Gruner, Brooks, and Parker) seem to have had a bit of a dust-up, at least at first, regarding who had the rights to use "Emily the Strange." At Amazon... ...First sight of a book about "Emily" is 'by Cosmic Debris': "Emily the Strange," released in '01. Cosmic Debris (probably a publisher) also put out "Emily's Little Black Book: Emily the Strange" in hardcover in '01. In '03, Rob Reger wrote "Emily's Secret Book of Strange," -a hardcover import- ...#2, "Emily the Strange: The Lost Issue" (by Cosmic Debris) in '05 came out, followed by... ...#3, "Emily the Strange: The Dark Issue" (by Cosmic Debris) in '06 Author Rob Reger, (with Gruner, Brooks and Parker) followed in quick order with four books, most released in Sept. '07 ...#1 "Emily the Strange: Lost, Dark and Bored" (Nov. '07 for that)... ...#2 "Emily the Strange: The Lost Issue" not Reger, but yes Gruner, Brooks and Parker, Sept. '07... ...#3 "Emily the Strange: The Dark Issue" by Reger, Brooks, Gruner and Parker, Sept. '07... ...#4 "Emily the Strange: The Rock Issue" by the same writer and others, again in Sept. '07 Re-releases of these, some bound together, some not... most in paperback have also been released this year and some not very previously.

do the creators of South Park really feel the way about the people they make shows about or brief slashes at?

Oh no, not at all. Trey and Matt will make fun of every single thing they can think of. But there have been incidences where I know they they do feel a certain way. But in the instance of religion, yeah they make fun of the main forms of religion....but they also made fun of atheism too. Matt is of jewish heritage, so he does not feel that way...but he will highlight stereotypes and make it as controversial as he can. But it's all humor. It's all comedy. Most controversial issues have been made light of. There is no badness in it at all, it's just their way of crossing the line and being as daring as they can. South Park is a controversial show. Racism is another issue and of course Trey and Matt are going to stereotype everything they can! That's the beauty of comedy...anything can be said at all in a comedy content. It's up to the people who view their show to come to their own conclusion. Long may South Park live. I'm a proud fan :)

Some people like to play music by Midnight Syndicate.

What are some haunted places in or around Alabama?

Albertville - Albertville Public Library - Some of the workers say that the elevator will go up and down by itself, hearing the water running in the bathroom & it stops when they look to see where it is coming from. They say that the library was built over a house that was tore down in the early 1900's and that the people who lived there are mad about their house being tore down so they haunt the library. Most of the things happen early in the morning when the first person comes to work all alone. Albertville - off highway 431 - Believed to be haunted by one of the first owners. He died while plowing his garden with a tractor it overturned on him and killed him. Soon afterwards the man's wife started hearing banging noises, so she moved and sold the house. The next owners had the same things had happened and they left the house in the night with all of there belongings still inside. when the house was empty neighbors would see lights come on at night and no one was there. the house has been on the market for quiet some time, the price was reduced by 20,000 dollars, when it is bought, no one will live there longer than a month. Albertville - Witch's Wall on 205 - Legend has it that a Hells Angels biker owned the house for about 20 years. He used to have meetings there and they would have satanic rituals above the horse stables. If you go there to investigate you will hear men chanting and screams of people in the house. Anniston - Blockbuster - The store was robbed and a group of the employees were killed the killer was caught but the store closed down and has remained standing. Many years before the Blockbuster incident the land on which the building sets was occupied by a gas station. In the late 1960's, a woman was brutally beaten, raped and murdered there. On the far right hand side is where her body was found. The murderer, on the other hand, never was. If you walk to the right side of the building which is were the killer supposedly exited the building you can feel the energy of the spirits it is in the form of like cold wind. Anniston - Parker Memorial - Hauntings of a nun who killed herself by hanging herself in the main hallway. It has been known to still hear her kicking the chair out from under her feet and hearing the choking sounds late at night. The rope has been seen numerous times by many other churchgoers. Athens - Athens State College - McCandles Hall - Is supposedly haunted by a girl in a white dress who died in McCandles Hall. Is also supposedly haunted by Madame Childs, who haunts the young women who stay out past curfew. Auburn - University Chapel - Haunted by a Confederate soldier

Which team do you hate the most and why?

I agree. The spurs make me so mad every time I watch. They always knock the Suns out in the playoffs with their dull fundamentally sound style. They need to get atleast one dynamic player and then maybe Ill consider watching them again. Also Boston. I like Garnett and Allen but Pierce pisses me off more than anybody in the league. That wheel chair stunt where he returned 5 minutes later because "an angel visited me in the change room" almost made me break my TV in disgust. They should let him go on waivers already.

How many bank robberies were there in the 1930?

List of bank robbers and robberies http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_bank_robbers_and_robberies ------------ Jesse James was one of the most popular and praised bank robbers of USA. In the early twentieth century Willie Sutton was asked why he robbed banks and he was famously reported as answering: "Because that's where the money is." This is, in fact, a quote invented by the interviewer to make the story more interesting. John Dillinger was another famous bank robber, who robbed banks in mid-western America. Some considered him a dangerous criminal, while others idolized him as a supposed present-day Robin Hood. He gained this latter reputation (and the nickname "Jackrabbit") for his graceful movements during bank heists, such as leaping over the counter (a movement he supposedly copied from the movies) and many narrow getaways from police. On July 22, 1934 in Chicago, Illinois, Dillinger was cornered by FBI agents in an alley outside of a movie theater, and was shot by a pistol while walking outside. He died at that location of gunshot wounds.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bank_robbery#Historical_Bank_Robbers ------------------- John Herbert Dillinger Jr. (June 22, 1903 – July 22, 1934) was an American bank robber in the Midwest during the early 1930s. He was considered to be a dangerous criminal who was involved in the deaths of several police officers, robbed at least two dozen banks and four police stations, escaped from jail twice and was idolized by some as a modern-day Robin Hood. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Dillinger ------------ THE KEARNEY BANK ROBBERY by Alice Shaneyfelt Howell On Saturday morning, January 20, 1934, shortly after ten o'clock, four masked men entered the Fort Kearney State Bank and robbed it of $10,000 or more in cash. The bandits, who were heavily armed, escaped in a waiting car with a fifth man at the wheel, taking five employees as hostages. Even though Sheriff William F. Flake and Postmaster Herman Mattson. Jr. were on their trail within a few minutes, not a trace of the five robbers was found, and none of the money was retrieved. http://bchs.kearney.net/BTales_199411.htm ---------- Among the most daring of crimes, bank robbery has always held a certain fascination with Americans. In the 1930's, the heyday of spectacular robberies, many people struggling through the Depression saw banks as ruthless oppressors and often cheered the exploits of Dillinger, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, and Charles Arthur (Pretty Boy) Floyd, who often destroyed mortgage records while stealing from banks, in a gesture of solidarity with ordinary people. http://www.nytimes.com/1995/03/28/us/bank-robberies-soaring-despite-the-risks.html?pagewanted=1 ---------------- Charles Arthur "Pretty Boy" Floyd (February 3, 1904 – October 22, 1934) was an American bank robber and killer, romanticized by the press and by folk singer Woody Guthrie in his song "Pretty Boy Floyd".http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pretty_Boy_Floyd ----------- A Bank Robbery in the 1930's http://homepage.eircom.net/~taghmon/histsoc/vol1/4bankrob/4bankrob.htm ---------------- Famous American bank robbers •Johnny Dobbs •The James Brothers, Frank and Jesse •John Ashley •Butch Cassidy •The Dalton Brothers , Grat, Bob, and Emett •Wilbur Underhill •Charles Arthur "Pretty Boy" Floyd •George "Baby Face" NelsonLester M. “Kids shouldn't be afraid of physical education. We need to push kids to want to do physical education on their own.” - Steve Thyfault “Athletics are great. A 16 year old boy named Antwun Parker was shot and killed in OKC last week trying to rob a pharmacy.?

It's the dumbest thing I have ever heard. The DA says that the pharmacist was justified in shooting the robber in the head, but went over board when he fired five extra rounds into the body. 1st degree murder implies that there was planning and forethought in the taking of the life. The DA is prosecuting to satisfy a small group of people who are making a lot o noise because someone got shot while attempting an armed robbery. The DA should be charged with inappropriate prosecution.

The same plan they have for all the violence that has plagued the city. watch it, don't care about it until it affects the ones that have the power to solve these problems. How would you fix the NBA playoffs?

I'll tell you what I would fix - the whiny, sore loser ass fans, like the ones in Phoenix this season. That series ended how long ago now? Get over it! It's easy to blame the Spurs and the league for the Suns losing the series. It's stupid enough to think that one game changed the outcome of the series. So they lost that game. But really, do you think without the suspension they would have even come as close to winning that game as they did? I don't. I think they were fired up about the whole situation and played better than they would have. But even if you're adamant about those damn suspensions costing them the series, remember this: No one forced Boris Diaw and Amare Stoudemaire to react like fools and step off the bench. How the hell can you blame us for that? Everyone knows the rule! Remember that Robert Horry was suspended for two games, when the foul didn't really warrant that. Even Suns fans have to admit that there was some major flopping after the contact by Nash. It's not as if Rob cost you a player for the season. You know, the Spurs lost to the Mavericks in a game 7 last season in which there were many questionable calls. An arguable foul called with 8 seconds left is pretty tough to swallow when your whole season is on the line. The Suns' fans can cry and feel cheated all summer. Spurs fans took heart last season in knowing that our boys were not going to take a loss like that without coming back the next year and making up for it. Let's see if your Suns will do the same...

What To Do If You Are Inside A Store And The Store Is Getting Robbed At Gunpoint?

If I could give Mr. Smartypants a thumbs up, I would. He is *ABSOLUTELY* correct in that statement; and I suggest everyone here take it seriously. If I were in that situation, I would do as told. Very slowly, and calmly. If I get an opportunity where he turns his back? *BAM!* I have a wife and toddler to go home to... I'm not about to risk my life for a convenience store that's already covered in that event. If I'm in the BACK of the store (behind shelves) and I hear the commotion, I'd see what I could do. I'm confident in my abilities to shoot at 100+ feet, and if need be, I would. This being said: NOT RISKING MY LIFE for a place that's already covered. Jake Parker: Then he sticks his .45 in your gut and pulls the trigger after you try that stunt. Don't be stupid. Not only YOUR life, but the lives of others are at stake. You have NO obligation to save the store. Likewise, as soon as you took the money; guess what? You're the thief.

Would the Redskins win the NFC if it was the year 2006?

Lol, I know you have been waiting for this day Rob! Only problem is that guy isn't washed up and he's the best you were going to have for a long while. As for him going to a division rival, I can understand the move. It was the best deal on the table and as a front office you look at the circus midgets they have at wide-out (all of them short gimmick players most of their career), that horrible offensive line plus a track record of bone headed decisions and it is easy to rationalize the move. Hell, people in the know realize Campbell had a solid year considering all the crap going on around him. One problem for the Eagles, They got worse! Here's how it will play out 1. Kevin Kolb will receive all kinds of love weeks 1 & 2 (every city loves its backup), but eventually the guy will flame out on the field. Then the philly fans will go into full bore attack mode and the press will start killing Reid. 2. "Pulled Pork" Reid & the front office will then get the idea that hey McNabb is black, Vick is black lets put Vick in and we'll have a black qb again. Well that will work for about another two weeks until the fans realize that guy reads defenses about as good as a undiagnosed dyslexic kid trying to read War & Peace. 3. "Jif"(for the peanut butter) Lurie will then cave in to pressure & clean house. Unfortunately, once Reid is gone all the venom moves his direction & the press starts beating the war drum by starting to point out how CHEAP that s.o.b. is and how they have continually been well below the cap. Then talk radio will kick into hyper drive forcing him to hide. This will lead to him making a bone headed decision to make a big splash. Well, as Dandy Dan has proven big splashes under bad circumstances lead to horrible results. End result, get ready for a tough 5 to 8 years!

Is it just me or is Jose Calderon one of the best pg in the league?

well he's not that high, yet but if he was playing for the lakers or the celtics or any other big named city which is in the us then he would be up there. he can shot and denfintly pass. im a raptor fan myself and I knew he was special since Rob Babcock signed him. he plays on the bench but him and t.j ford are the best 1 - 2 combination at pg in the league. the problem with calderon is that he doesnt have a starting job and isnt playing per 35 minute per game. if he was then he would average closely to 8 or 9 assit per game and 10 or 11 points per game. he leads the league in assit to turnover ratio. also the raptors share the ball alot so calerdon does get the second last touch for the assist. if he was playing on the lakers where they play a triangle offence he could rasie his assit ratio to 13 or 14 assit per game and also given the 30 to 35 or over minutes per game

Do you think most analysts including stephen a. and rob parker are underestimating the spurs?

Yes, but the rightfully so... The Spurs were in the same position last season, and lost in the first round. Although last year, was last year. People were doubting the Mavs for the same reason last season. I don't think the spurs have the best chance, but I think they have a great chance.

who are some interesting people during the roaring twenties and great depression?

The couple you're thinking of is likely Bonnie and Clyde (Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow) tho there were other less well known but equally interesting bandit couples of the period, such as Ed and Cecelia Cooney ("The Bobbed-Haired Bandit") and Bennie Dickson and his wife "Sure Shot" Stella. Other interesting gangsters and outlaws of the period, besides Al Capone, included John Dillinger, Dutch Schultz, Legs Diamond, Mad Dog Coll, Lucky Luciano, Pretty Boy Floyd, and Baby Face Nelson. The gangster era also brought the rise of the FBI and made celebrities of J. Edgar Hoover and Melvin Purvis. Political figures: Warren G. Harding, Herbert Hoover, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Huey Long, Al Smith, Tom Pendergast, Thomas E. Dewey. Internationally, Mussolini, Stalin, Lenin, Chiang Kai Shek, Hitler, and Franco all rose to prominence in this period. Will Rogers was a much beloved humorist, entertainer and commentator of the period who died in a plane crash along with famed aviator Wiley Post. Other aviation heroes: Charles Lindbergh, first man to fly solo across the Atlantic, whose son was later kidnapped and murdered by Bruno Hauptmann. And Amelia Earhart, Lindbergh's female counterpart who disappeared in the Pacific. And General Billy Mitchell, who got court-martialed over his defiance of the War Department in insisting that the future of warfare lay in airplanes capable of bombing and sinking enemy ships. Popular sports figures included "Shoelace Joe" Jackson, Babe Ruth, Knute Rockne, Bobby Jones, Jack Dempsey, and Joe Louis. Entertainers of the day included Lon Chaney Sr. and Lon Chaney Jr., John Barrymore, Charles Chaplin, Rudolph Valentino, Clara Bow, Jean Harlow, Al Jolson, Laurel and Hardy, Mae West, Boris Karloff, the Marx Brothers, and Shirley Temple. Walter Winchell and Edward R. Murrow were a couple of well known news comentators. Writers of the day included F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Steinbeck, Theodore Dreiser, and John Dos Passos. The list of interesting people from this period is truly endless: Henry Ford, Poncho Villa, John D. Rockefeller, William Randolph Hearst, Clarence Darrow, Samuel Liebowitz, Mother Jones, Alice B. Toklas, Woody Guthrie, Django Reinhardt, Robert Johnson, W.C. Fields, etc. One really can't even begin to scratch the surface in any category. Hundreds of names could be added to all of the above.

What kind of places were commonly robbed by outlaws in the old west?

These stories should help you! There are more at the link at the botttom! COLORADO Telluride, Colorado Bob Parker arrived in the mining town of Telluride, Colorado in 1884. There he met another young Utah cowboy, Matt Warner. Telluride was flush with money from the booming mining industry. Much of the wealth was stockpiled in the San Miguel Valley Bank. The bank was robbed at gunpoint on June 24, 1889. Historians believe the robbers were Tom McCarty, Matt Warner, Robert Leroy Parker, and a fourth man. A posse tracked the Telluride robbers to Brown's Park near Vernal, Utah. There the outlaws split up and escaped. WYOMING Sundance, Wyoming Sundance, Wyoming sits near the shadow of the famous landmark, the Devil's Tower. Harry Longabaugh (alias "the Sundance Kid") was brought for trial to Sundance for stealing a horse, saddle and pistol from the Three V Ranch in Northeast Wyoming in February 1887. He served an 18-month sentence in the Sundance Jail. When he was released, he had a new nickname, "The Sundance Kid." ^ back to top Hole-In-The Wall, Wyoming Butch worked a small ranch on Blue Creek near Kaycee, Wyoming. The ranch is near the famous outlaw hideout, Hole-In-The Wall. Rustlers and outlaws used the narrow "V" passage because of its remoteness and secrecy. Rock Springs, Wyoming As the story goes, Butch worked for a butcher shop in Rock Springs, Wyoming. He may have learned to butcher from his expertise as a rustler. The nickname stuck. He became "Butch Cassidy." ^ back to top Laramie, Wyoming Butch and a man by the name of Al Hainer were arrested for horse stealing in April 1892. The two were hunted down in Star Valley, Wyoming. Butch Cassidy, under the name of George Cassidy, was found guilty of stealing a horse. He was sentenced to the Wyoming Territorial Prison in Laramie beginning July 15, 1894. Butch's mug shot as he entered prison is one of the few authenticated photographs that exist. His birth place was listed falsely as New York City. Butch was sentenced to two years of hard labor. He was paroled six months early on January 19, 1896. He returned to Brown's Park, Utah. The Laramie Prison was built in 1872. It was used until 1903. ^ back to top Wilcox, Wyoming Outlaw gangs looked at trains as easy marks. Historian Richard Patterson describes the method used in the 1870s: "The trains were usually halted by loosening a rail, stacking ties or logs on the tracks, or signaling the engineer with a fake emergency." All that changed with the use of dynamite. Robbers stopped Union Pacific's Overland Flyer on June 2, 1899. The location was near Wilcox, Wyoming north of Laramie. The time was 2:18 a.m. They went to the express car. E.C. Woodcock was ordered to open the door. He refused. Outlaws blew up the car with dynamite. Woodcock was stunned but not seriously hurt. The outlaws made off with about $30,000. The robbers split up. One group shot it out with a pursuing posse led by Sheriff Josiah Hazen. Sheriff Hazen was killed in the gunfight. Hazen was extremely well-respected. His funeral was a big event in Douglas, Wyoming. The outlaws received national fame. They were identified as Harvey "Kid Curry" Logan, George "Flat Nose" Currie, and Harvey's brother, Lonny Logan. The robbers escaped. ^ back to top Tipton, Wyoming The date was August 29, 1900. Butch Cassidy was 34 years old. The place was Tipton, Wyoming. The Union Pacific Number 3 from Omaha was stopped by robbers. The express car was blown open with dynamite. The clerk was the same E.C. Woodcock from the Wilcox train robbery. Mounted posses were dispatched by Union Pacific. The outlaws escaped on a fresh relay of horses left before the robbery. SOUTH DAKOTA, 1897 Outlaws rode in to Belle Fourche, South Dakota on June 28, 1897. Belle Fourche means "beautiful fork" in French. The town was named for the river that runs through it. Suspected members of Cassidy's gang entered the bank. Outlaws robbed the bank. They made off with less than $100. ^ back to top NEW MEXICO, 1897-1899 After the 1897 Belle Fourche, South Dakota bank robbery, Butch Cassidy may have decided the time was right to allow things to cool down. Butch Cassidy and Elzy Lay rode in to the WS Ranch in Alma, New Mexico. The ranch was owned by William French. Butch used the name Jim Lowe. Elzy was William McGinness. Rancher William French thought highly of the man he knew as Jim Lowe. In a letter, French praised Jim's skill in driving cattle to the railhead. Pinkerton detective Charles Siringo described Alma, New Mexico as "a store, a saloon, and a pair of dry-rotting hitching posts." Pinkerton was on the trail of the two riders. They riders had a string of saddle horses. Money from the Wilcox robbery was tracked to the Alma, New Mexico store. The money was identified from being torn as it was blown out of the safe by dynamite. Butch Cassidy left Alma, New Mexico. A train was robbed near Folsum, New Mexico
